Getting Started with ChatGPT:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) might sound like something only the younger tech crowd or software developers get excited about—but here’s the truth: you’re probably already using it without realising.
Have you ever asked Siri or Alexa a question? Did you use Google Maps to avoid traffic? Let your phone suggest the next word in a text? That’s AI in action. Quietly working behind the scenes, making life a little easier.
Now imagine if you could harness that same kind of technology—deliberately and with purpose—to save time, get organised, or even grow a business. That’s where ChatGPT comes in.
I help people over 50—especially Olderpreneurs—learn how to utilise tools like ChatGPT to become more productive, creative, and confident in the digital world. And the best part? You don’t need to be a tech wizard or jump in at the deep end.
The key is to start small.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI tool developed by OpenAI. In simple terms, it’s an intelligent assistant that can assist you with various everyday tasks, including writing emails, answering questions, and brainstorming ideas, among others.
It’s not just a chatbot. It’s more like a friendly partner that knows how to communicate like a real person. You can ask it to be formal, casual, simple, or even poetic. And because it’s been trained on an enormous amount of text, it’s surprisingly good at helping with almost anything involving words.
How Do You Access It?
Getting started is easy. Just visit chat.openai.com, create a free account, and you’re in.
You don’t need to install anything or know how it works behind the scenes. If you can send a text or write an email, you can use ChatGPT.
Start With the Basics
This is the most important part.
Start with something simple. The temptation might be to ask it to write a business plan or build a marketing strategy straight away—but that can feel overwhelming at first.
Instead, begin like this:
- Ask it for tonight’s dinner ideas
- Get a list of rainy-day activities for the grandkids
- Ask it to write a short thank-you note
- Request a simple explanation of something you’re curious about (e.g. “What is Bitcoin?” or “What does ‘cloud storage’ mean?”)
These tiny wins help you build confidence. You get used to how it replies, how to ask better questions, and what it’s good at. It’s like learning to drive in an empty car park before hitting the motorway.
Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll naturally start asking bigger, more valuable things—like helping with emails, content ideas, or streamlining parts of your business.
Why Prompts Matter (and How to Keep Them Simple)
Your prompt is what you type in—the question or task you give ChatGPT.
The clearer and more specific your prompt, the better the answer will be. But don’t overthink it at the beginning. Even something like:
“Can you write a short message to wish my friend a happy birthday?”
…is a perfect place to start.
Later, you can build up to things like:
“Write a friendly follow-up email to a customer who hasn’t responded in 3 days.”
Early on, keep it light and low-stakes.
Can ChatGPT Assist Me Even If I’m Not Technically Inclined?
Absolutely. That’s the point.
You don’t need to know how AI works. You need to know what you want to say, ask, or do. ChatGPT takes care of the rest.
It’s designed to feel like an everyday conversation. If the reply doesn’t feel right, you say so. You can ask it to explain itself more clearly or refine the answer. It’s like having a calm, clever assistant who never gets tired.
What Can It Help With—Eventually?
Once you’re feeling more confident, ChatGPT can help you with:
- Writing better emails
- Generating ideas for social media
- Crafting messages to customers
- Planning an event or launch
- Rewriting things in clearer English
- Learning something new, step-by-step
- Organising your thoughts when you’re stuck
But again, don’t rush into all that. Build up to it in your own time.
Final Thoughts from Me
If you’re over 50 and curious about AI, the hardest part is often just getting started. So don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be.
Start with one small question.
Let ChatGPT give you a quick win. Then another. Before long, you’ll see just how powerful this tool can be.
I’ve helped many older entrepreneurs transition from “I’m not very technical” to “I use ChatGPT every day now.”
And I’d love to help you, too.
